Manhattan. Fuction Follows Form

Clay, glaze, pigments, 1020°C

2022

The piece was inspired by Rem Koolhaas’ book “Delirious New York: A Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan” (1978). The architectural decisions of the early 20th century New York managed to create not only a unique landscape but also a lifestyle. The strangest, most daring ideas of the architects shaped exclusive urban ecosystems that allowed for the formation of an extremely unusual way of life for New Yorkers. The titular phrase function follows form is a reference to the aim of modernist architecture for form to follow function. Only in this case, the opposite occurs – the building, instead of serving a specific function, itself becomes the reason for new patterns of social behavior, shaping and peculiarizing individuals in its own image.

Main sculpture – 1900€; smaller sculptures around – 100€ each.
